The Rocky Mountain fur trade continues to fascinate all who are interested in American history. Hollywood created much of what we thought we knew of the mountain men, but through the years, historians and living history participants have diligently worked to bring about a truer image of the people and the era.
One of the latest efforts to increase knowledge and bring fresh perspectives to the Rocky Mountain fur trade is The Rocky Mountain Fur Trade Journal, Volume 1, 2007 published by the Sublette County Historical Society and the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale, Wyoming. This first annual publication contains articles on the Hudson’s Bay Company’s involvement in the rendezvous system by Dale F. Topham, the deerskin trade in the West by Ken Zontek, Kit Carson’s effect on popular culture by Dr. S. Matthew DeSpain, Hawaiians in the fur trade by Keith “Moki” Hipol, the introduction of percussion firearms in the West by Alex Miller, John “Jeremiah Liver-Eating” Johnston by Nathan E. Bender, and La Verendrye and the opening of the Western fur trade by Brad Tennant.
Each article accepted for publication is well written, heavily researched and peer-reviewed. The people on the reviewing panel are top-notch in their field and include historians and material culture experts. The authors and reviewers for this volume include: Allen Chronister, Jim Hardee, Clay Landry, Alex Miller, and Tim Tanner. The journal is nicely illustrated throughout with mostly original artwork and images.
The Rocky Mountain Fur Trade Journal is a source for substantive information with fresh perspectives on the Western fur trade.
